Lighthouse Landscapes

Students discovered that lighthouses are popular subjects for painters. Reinforcing their knowledge of lighthouses from their third grade lighthouse unit, students learned how colors and patterns on lighthouses can help them stand out in the day time.
Students also learned about the terms background, middle ground, and foreground and how they are used visually. Using their imaginations, students created their own lighthouse scenes from paint, paper, and glue. All of their scenes do incorporate backgrounds, middle grounds, and foregrounds. It was their choice of what to include in each. Can you tell which part is which? If you aren’t sure, ask a third graderJ

Spooky Trees

Students experimented with a new way to paint...that's blowing paint from straws. Students first created watercolor gradient backgrounds and let them dry. After, they added creepy, mangled trees using black paint, straws, and the air from their mouths.

My Coat of Arms

Students looked at various coat of arms shield symbols that were used back in the medival times. Students also looked at coat of arms symbols used by the state of Michigan and the United State's seal. Students learned how to decode these symbols to see what they might stand for. Students had the chance to design a coat of arms symbol for themselves using specific symbols and colors to illustrate their unique personalities.
