Watercolor Resist Animals

Op Art

Northern Lights Mural Project

For this project, students practiced their observation skills by using the grid method to first draw an animal of their choice. After drawing in pencil, students applied rubber cement to areas of the animals they wanted to stay white to stand for the highlights. Students learned about analogous color schemes and were instructed to choose one for their project. A watercolor wash was applied over the entire image where the color did not mix with the rubber cement barrier. After using various blending techniques with the watercolor paint to create an analogous painting, students let the paintings dry out. The rubber cement was rubbed off to reveal a high contrast image of an animal.

Students learned about different kinds of op art and how they are made. Students discovered how op art can fool our minds by the precise positions of various lines and colors. Students practiced making their own op art using checkered boards, curved lines, and shading to make something 2D appear to be 3D.

Students worked as a team on this two week mural project to decorate the cafeteria walls for their winter formal dance. After a lot of trial and error, students really learned how to work as a team to create this gigantic mural.  The mural's dimensions are 11'8" by 111'.
